The ultrabook market is currently experiencing a growth spurt.Sony VAIO PCG-CS battery Virtually every reputable notebook manufacturer has introduced at least one model in the past few months. In contrast to notebooks which are also designed to cover the mobile sector, ultrabooks feature much higher computing powers and have much higher build qualities. Sony’s latest entry into the ultrabook market is the 13.3 inch Vaio SVT1311M1ES. Sony VAIO PCG batteryThe ultrabook is made completely of aluminum. Behind its sleek and attractive exterior lies a thoroughly well designed interior. The Vaio is based on a new Intel Core i3 ULV processor and a hybrid hard disk. The ultrabook's weight of 1.6 kilograms (3.5 pounds) is also impressive. We will see how Sony's ultrabook fares in our tests.Sony VAIO VGN-TX battery

We would like to add that our test sample of Sony's Vaio SVT1311M1ES is a pre-series model. Sony VAIO VGN-T batteryThere may be differences in upcoming retail configurations and it should be noted that our results, measurements, and findings may not apply to these retail configurations. The Sony Vaio SVT1311M1ES makes an excellent first impression. The aluminum surface, which is partly brushed aluminum, looks very high-end and elegant. The feel also conveys this impression.Sony VAIO VGN-N battery

Moreover, the aluminum case fits well with the ultrabook's design and can best be described as elegant. Sony VAIO VGN-FS batteryThe notebook's low build height underlines this even more. The screen can be opened comfortably using one hand and without lifting the base at the same time. One will notice how little weight the delicate display has when opening it. This however also has an impact on the screen's stability. The slightest pressure is enough to cause the display to warp. It seems that a few components in the display bezel exert pressure against the screen and we noticed a few marks here.Sony VAIO VGN-FJ battery

Two small plastic feet at the rear of the ultrabook elevate the entire rear end of the unit to make typing more comfortable and improve the ultrabook's cooling. The user sees more aluminum when the device is opened.Sony VAIO VGN-FE battery Our pressure tests show that the base unit is more rigid than the display. The wrist rest hardly yields under pressure and the frame around the keyboard is also very solid. The surface can only be depressed slightly in the keyboard's center. This is within acceptable limits and barely noticeable when typing.Sony VAIO VGN-AR battery

Overall, the ultrabook's workmanship does not give reason for complaint. The aluminum case and solid build give the user the confidence of knowing that he or she is dealing with a high-end device. However, the screen should be treated with care due to its low thickness and resulting lack of complete rigidity.Sony VAIO VGN-BX battery

The touchpad in Sony's SVT1311M1ES is pretty wide but not very tall. This becomes obvious when looking at the touchpad's dimensions of 100 millimeters (width) x 56 millimeters (height) (3.9 x 2.2 inches) and a diagonal of 112 millimeters (4.4 inches). No mouse keys are seen at first glance.Sony VAIO PCG-N505 battery Like Apple notebooks, the touchpad itself is the key and can be pressed at both lower edges. A clear click noise confirms triggering. This feature worked perfectly in the test. Sony VAIO PCG-Z505 battery

However, we were a bit unhappy with the touchpad's functions. The touchpad often responded very sluggishly or jerkily.Sony VAIO PCG-R505 battery This is very annoying and bothersome during use and does not really fit into the quality device that the Vaio SVT1311M1ES attempts to be. We however assume that the occasional jerks are due to the pre-series status and will be eliminated in the retail version. Multi-touch of course belongs to the touchpad's scope of functions. However, it also exhibits occasional jerks in the course of normal use.Sony VAIO PCG-V505 battery

Intel's Core i3-2367M processor is installed in Sony's ultrabook. It is a ULV (ultra low voltage) model with an exceptionally low consumption. Sony VAIO PCG-TR batteryHowever, that also affects performance. Both cores are not clocked particularly high at 1.4 GHz. Turbo Boost 2.0 is not a feature of the ULV processor and thus it is not automatically overclocked during use. Nevertheless, multi-threading is possible and so it can process four threads simultaneously. Intel's HD Graphics 3000 is also integrated in the processor. Due to this limitation, the i3-2367M only has a TDP of 17 watts. "Normal" i3 processors are specified with a TDP of 35 watts.SONY VAIO VPCEB11FM battery

To date, we have not had many 13.3 inch subnotebooks or ultrabooks for review. As a result, comparisons with Sony's Vaio ultrabook are limited. Only Toshiba's Portégé Z830-10N (2367M, HD 3000) features the same processor. By comparison, the Vaio ultrabook scores a bit better than the Portégé in Cinebench R10's single rendering (64bit) test of only one core. The Vaio achieves 2275.0 points while Toshiba's Portégé lags a bit behind with 2233.0 points.SONY VAIO VPCEF20 battery

Except for Firewire, Sony has actually given the Vaio VPC-EB1S1E/BJ all connections that you can expect from a multimedia notebook nowadays. Aside from the mandatory socket for the adapter and a RJ-45 gigabit LAN port, there are two monitor sockets on the left.SONY VAIO VPCEE20 battery Whereby VGA is mainly suitable for older monitors. Because the image quality via VGA is very modest, you should fall back on the significantly more modern HDMI if possible.Sony VAIO VPCZ116GGB battery

HDMI transmits image and audio signals in a very high quality and is thus perfect for connecting it to your own entertainment center. An eSATA, which can also be fitted with USB devices with a bit of pressure from the user, has been placed beside the HDMI. A slot for ExpressCards with a width of 34 mm finishes the left.SONY VAIO VPCEC20 battery

Besides that, even two cardreaders can be found on the front. One is thought for Sony's own formats (MS) and the other is for SD cards. Right beside that a practical slider is hidden, SONY VAIO VPCEB20 batterywith which the integrated WLAN and Bluetooth can be enabled or disabled. Additionally, two audio sockets wait on the front right end (headphone/line-out, microphone/line-in), over which positioning you can argue virtuously. In return, the port distribution on the right is unacceptable.SONY VAIO VPCEB10 battery

To place three USB 2.0 port in the front area is more than impracticable. SONY VPCEA20 batteryIf you have many cables connected and use a mouse, you're freedom of movement will be obviously restricted (as also on the left). Apart from that, the optical drive is found beside the USB ports (in our case an unspectacular DVD burner) and a Kensington lock.SONY VAIO Z battery

So there is barely anything to complain about in terms of the connectivity alignment, but the port distribution belongs to one of the most disadvantageous ones that we have ever seen.Sony VAIO VPCZ12AVJ battery The input devices make an overall good impression, despite numerous cutbacks. The keyboard can convince with its well-sized keys, a well-considered layout and a crisp key pressure point and stroke. The stability of the separate number pad isn't as convincing. This area bends even under the slightest pressure. Also, both the arrow keys and the left shift key have turned out a bit too narrow. The clattery, loud and cheap sounding noise emitted while typing is a further disadvantage.Sony VAIO VPCZ12AHJ battery

By the by, there are three hot keys above the keyboard. The so-called "Web" key is especially worth mentioning. Sony VAIO VPCZ12AGJ batteryPressing the "Web" key during Windows' operation merely opens a web browser, whilst a sort of mini operating system starts in a deactivated state. It reminds strongly of ExpressGate and allows access within seconds to an amazingly fast web browser. This function is particularly handy if you only want to check your emails or look something up quickly.Sony VAIO VPCZ12AFJ battery

The Sony Vaio FZ21E is an aesthetically pleasing notebook in compact case, whose workmanship is alright and which scores points,Sony VAIO VPCZ129GG battery because of its first-class haptics. The provided HDMI port makes this notebook even fit for the digital future. The input devices, i.e, keyboard and touch pad, are user-friendly, so, satisfying an important aspect of office optimized notebooks. The hotkeys right above the keyboard are also user-friendly and look good.Sony VAIO VPCZ128GG battery

The built-in display is overall average. It's resolution is 1280x800 pixels, the brightness is good, while contrast and illumination are acceptable.Sony VAIO VPCZ11ZHJ battery However, the viewing angles are not so good. The performance of the Sony Vaio VGN-FZ21E is obviously optimized for office tasks and low noise an temperature emissions. Multimedia applications, especially computer games, are only possible with restrictions. For daily work like Internet, office and DVD playback the provided performance is by all means sufficient.Sony VAIO VPCZ11AVJ battery

The battery runtime of the notebook ranges from very short 50 minutes under load to a maximum of 4 hours with activated energy saving options (minimum brightness,…). In practice (i.e. with WLAN) the runtime will be assumably about 2-2.5 hours.Sony VAIO VPCZ11AHJ batteryAlthough Sony cites a "special anti-reflection coating", the Vaio's display basically reflects just as much as the glossy reps that are used for the majority of notebooks nowadays. The colors might generally appear a bit more vibrant,Sony VAIO VPCZ11AGJ battery but the disadvantages definitely outweigh the advantages. Thus, unpleasant reflections can already turn up indoors in adverse light conditions or light incidence. Additionally, there is almost nothing to be seen on the display already in normal daylight outdoors, not to mention the extraordinary smudge sensitivity.Sony VAIO VPCZ11AFJ battery

Conclusively, the limited viewing angles have to accept criticism. Already slight deviations are enough to drive the image into gray and to falsify color fidelity, in particular on the vertical plane.Sony VAIO VPCZ118GC batteryOverall, the built-in display is completely disappointing and is only suitable for office tasks or for generally undemanding users. If you edit images, like to play games or often watch movies, you should definitely connect an external monitor.Sony VAIO VPCZ119GC battery

In the Cinebench R10 multi rendering (64bit) test, the Vaio stays ahead of Toshiba's Portégé Z830-10N. Sony VAIO VPCZ117GGX batteryThe difference between both notebooks is very marginal. Sony's ultrabook leads with 5048.0 points to 4821.0 points for Toshiba's laptop. Sony's ultrabook is soundly defeated when compared with the MacBook Air 13 inch 2011 (2557M, HD 3000) at 8266.0 points.Sony VAIO VPCZ117FC battery It should be noted that the Vaio belongs to a set of slower models when compared with other ultrabooks (comparison: Asus Zenbook UX31E-DH52B (2557M, HD 3000) 8349.0 points). Here it becomes evident that other ultrabooks are equipped with stronger processors.

We tested the Asus N55SF -S1124V 15.6" multimedia notebook in November last year. Acer 5633WLMi battery Now, Asus has an updated version in its range called N55SL-S1016V. The new SL shares a lot with its predecessor: the same case, a 1080p matte screen, and a subwoofer. However , the refresh sports Intel's dual core i5-2450M instead of a quad core i7-2630QM. The graphics card has also been changed. While the Asus N55SF-S1124V still featured an Nvidia GeForce GT 555M, the GeForce GT 635M is the card of choice for the SL. Acer 5632WLMi battery

The SL comes with a 500 GB hard drive and 8 GB of memory. Another major difference compared with the SF is the price. Whereas Asus price-tagged the Asus N55SF-S1124V at EUR 1100 ($1400), the SL is only EUR 900 ($1145). Acer 5612AWLMi battery That is reason enough to take a closer look.In the past few months, Asus has stirred up the tablet community with its Transformer Pad series. Foremost amongst these tablets was the Prime TF201, which performed very well in many reviews. Sadly, its aluminum case caused problems with WLAN and GPS reception. Acer 5612WLMi battery

The successor, the Transformer Pad TF300T, has a composite material case (and avoids those issues), but it does not have the same level of workmanship or great display as the Prime. The latest addition to the Transformer family is the high-end Transformer Pad Infinity TF700T which corrects all the past mistakes. Asus promises a fantastic design, great workmanship and top class performance. Acer 5611ZWLMi battery

We cannot find any deficiencies in the technical specifications of the tablet. The 10.1 inch display has a resolution of 1920 x 1200 pixels. Acer 5611AWLMi battery The model runs on the powerful Nvidia Tegra 3 CPU (4 cores runs at 1.6GHz) and has up to 64GB flash storage. The technical specifications of the Asus Transformer Pad Infinity TF700T are a delight to read, as this is one of the most powerful tablets, on paper at least. In addition, the test model has a great look: an aluminum case with the Asus ZEN design. This design is composed of fine, concentric circles on the case surface, which "simulate the senses". As expected, the Infinity looks great, especially as it is so thin. Apple PowerBook G4 17inch battery

The Infinity TF700T would not be a Transformer Pad without a docking keyboard. This Asus model is bundled with a docking keyboard which will make typing easier, add more ports and increase the battery life. Deliveries without the bundled dock will be available in the middle of July. Apple iBook G4 14inch battery Asus has not announced any news about a 3G or LTE model. The Asus Transformer Pad TF300T was an experiment with a case made of composites. The Taiwanese manufacturer has reverted to aluminum and copies off of the Prime TF201 for this test model. Apple iBook G3 14inch battery

The new Asus top dog, the Transformer Pad Infinity TF700T, uses the Asus ZEN design, which is made up of concentric circles inscribed on the aluminum surface. Our test model has the product code TF700T-1B130A and comes in amethyst-grey. The slight violet coloration is really nice on the 10.1 inch tablet. The test model neither looks too dull nor too gaudy. Apple PowerBook G4 12inch battery

The new iPad may be a slim tablet, but this Asus test model is ultra-slim. The technical specifications state a thickness of 8.5mm, making the tablet a pleasure to hold in the hand. The Asus device weighs 598 grams (~1.32lb.), which is not the lightest tablet in this category. Apple PowerBook G4 15inch Titanium battery

The workmanship of this review sample is impeccable. Asus maintains the high standard found in the Prime TF201. We found no flaws in the Infinity TF700T - no sharp edges or irregular gaps. Apple iBook G4 12inch battery The aluminum case is very sturdy and requires a lot of force to deform. The display is protected by the scratch resistant Corning Gorilla Glass. Asus has installed the second generation of the scratch-resistant glass, which according to Corning, is far slimmer than its predecessor and just as robust. Apple iBook G3 12inch battery

The docking keyboard is bundled with out test model. This keyboard is made of aluminum and is the same color as the tablet. Apple PowerBook G4 15inch battery The circles of the ZEN design are not included. Thankfully, the workmanship is the same as that of the tablet. The keyboard weighs 538 grams, which brings the total weight of the docked tablet to about 1100 grams (~2.6lb.). This is similar to the weight of a light netbook. As the docking keyboard contains a second battery, the Asus Infinity should beat any netbook in terms of battery life. Apple MacBook Pro 15 inch battery

The Asus Transformer Pad Infinity TF700T runs on four cores like many other tablets nowadays. Apple MacBook 13 inch battery The tablet uses the Nvidia SoC Tegra 3. The tablet stands out thanks to the higher clock frequency of the processor : 1.7GHz (max while one core is running) and 1.6GHz (all four running). As all other models with Tegra 3 SoCs, the Asus Infinity has a fifth core which only kicks in for less-demanding tasks, so as to extend the battery life. The graphics chip with twelve processing cores is also a part of the SoC (System on a Chip). The RAM amounts to 1GB which is typical for tablets. Apple MacBook Pro 15 inch battery

High resolution is an exceptional feature for a 10.1 inch display. The 1920 x 1200 pixel resolution (16:10) of our test model is only surpassed by the ‘Retina display’ of the new iPad (2048 x 1536 pixels). Apple MacBook Air 13.3-inch battery Asus speaks of a Full-HD resolution, which is not the same resolution as the normal Full-HD. Let us put it this way: the Asus panel displays more than the Full-HD resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. This is very promising and the icing on the cake is that the screen is a Super-IPS panel. The additional hardware in short: 64GB internal storage, microSD card of up to 32GB supported, an 8MP camera (back) and a 2MP camera (front). Apple Macbook Air 13 inch battery

Software
The Transformer Pad TF300T had already gotten on the Android 4.0 train. Apple 13 inch MacBook Air battery The Infinity TF700T continues this trend by running on the newest Google OS, Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS). As in the TF300T, our test model is running on the Minor-Release 4.0.3. This means that everything mentioned in the review of the Asus Transformer Pad TF300T about the Google OS and Apps is applicable to our test model. Fujitsu LifeBook S710 battery

Asus had already installed two cameras in the Transformer Pad TF300T (rear camera - 8MP with auto-focus). The "Infinity" is also equipped with two cameras, one on the back and one in the front, where, instead of a 1.2 MP sensor, the manufacturer has installed a 2MP camera. Fujitsu LifeBook S6311 battery

We believe Asus has used the same chip used in the TF300T for our review sample. The "Incredible Camera" has a lens of F2.2 specification which is supposedly very good even in poor lighting conditions. Fujitsu LifeBook S6310 battery The LED flash was not included in the TF300T , but it is on-board in the Asus Infinity TF700T. This was not a necessary addition. The performance of the flash is not discernible and makes the quality of pictures worse due to flash blowout lowering the quality of the images. Videos can be recorded in Full-HD resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels by the rear camera. The second camera is placed in the front (slightly to the right of center). The camera may not take very good pictures but it does perform well for video chatting. Fujitsu LifeBook S2210 battery

High MP numbers may look good on paper, but they aren’t the whole story. Small sensors installed in the tablets cause problems. The pictures usually lack sharpness and bright colors, which can get much worse in bad lighting conditions. Fujitsu LifeBook P8110 battery Asus hopes to counter these flaws by installing a rear camera module which can take good pictures even in bad lighting. They manage to do so – partially. The pictures are good enough to be snapshots. However, demanding photographers will want more sharpness and they will complain about the pale colors. As soon as the light drops, the picture quality drops. As such, Asus is not ahead of other tablet manufacturers when it comes to camera performance. The front camera is not suited for . Fujitsu LifeBook LH700 battery

The Asus Transformer Pad Infinity TF700T runs on four cores like many other tablets nowadays. The tablet uses the Nvidia SoC Tegra 3. The tablet stands out thanks to the higher clock frequency of the processor: 1.7GHz (max while one core is running) and 1.6GHz (all four running). Fujitsu LifeBook E8310 battery As all other models with Tegra 3 SoCs, the Asus Infinity has a fifth core which only kicks in for less-demanding tasks, so as to extend the battery life. The graphics chip with twelve processing cores is also a part of the SoC (System on a Chip). The RAM amounts to 1GB which is typical for tablets. Fujitsu LifeBook L1010 battery

High resolution is an exceptional feature for a 10.1 inch display. The 1920 x 1200 pixel resolution (16:10) of our test model is only surpassed by the ‘Retina display’ of the new iPad (2048 x 1536 pixels). Fujitsu FMV-S8250 battery Asus speaks of a Full-HD resolution, which is not the same resolutio n as the normal Full-HD. Let us put it this way: the Asus panel displays more than the Full-HD resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. This is very promising and the icing on the cake is that the screen is a Super-IPS panel. Fujitsu FMV-S8225 battery

The additional hardware in short: 64GB internal storage , microSD card of up to 32GB supported, an 8MP camera (back) and a 2MP camera (front). Fujitsu FMV-S8220 battery
New tablets should have an easy time in the connectivity test. However , many voices spoke out about the poor WLAN and GPS performance in the Asus Transformer Pad Prime TF201. This was indeed the case, as we found in a later test, that the metal case of the Prime TF201 strongly affected the signal. Fujitsu FMV-R8290 battery

Of course, we have taken our time testing the newest tablet from Asus as it also uses a metal case. Fujitsu FMV-BIBLO MG75U battery The Infinity test model did not have the GPS weakness found in the Prime TF201. In different places (from the countryside to the city and even in the forest), the GPS signal was always perfect. The accuracy was always within 10m. Fujitsu FMV-BIBLO MG75SN battery

The wireless hardware is identical to the recently tested Transformer Pad TF300T . The Infinity uses 802.11b/g/n WLAN (only 2.4GHz frequency) and Bluetooth 3.0. A version with a 3G module has not yet been announced by Asus. The TF300T is available with 3G and even LTE. Fujitsu FMV-BIBLO MG75S battery We will need to wait and see if Asus decides to add these features on their flagship model as well. Most users who purchase such an expensive tablet will want to have the freedom to choose. Fujitsu FMV-BIBLO MG70SN battery
